Overview
Rufford’s Bent-toed Gecko (Cyrtodactylus rufford) is a specialized karst-dwelling lizard discovered in 2014 within the rugged limestone towers of Khammouane Province in central Laos. Named in honor of the Rufford Foundation for its support of biodiversity research, this nocturnal squamate demonstrates exquisite morphological adaptations for scaling vertical, razor-sharp karst rock faces.
Biology and Physical Characteristics
Cyrtodactylus rufford is distinguished by an elongated, flattened head, large copper-gold eyes with vertical cat-like pupils, and slender limbs terminating in curved, bent digits equipped with sharp claws. Its dorsal body displays a striking pattern of four to five irregular, dark-chocolate transverse bands edged with creamy white on a light-tan ground, interspersed with rounded tubercular scales that break up its body outline against jagged stone.
Behavior and Ecology
Strictly nocturnal and rupicolous, Rufford’s bent-toed gecko spends daylight hours concealed deep within cool, inaccessible limestone fractures and subterranean crevices. At dusk, it emerges onto vertical rock walls and cavern entrances, using its specialized bent toes to sprint across sheer limestone without slipping. It ambushes passing cave insects and retreats instantly into rock fissures when alarmed.
Conservation and Human Impact
Because Cyrtodactylus rufford is narrowly adapted to isolated karst microhabitats, it is exceptionally vulnerable to habitat destruction. Karst ecosystems in Indochina face severe threats from industrial limestone quarrying for cement production, unregulated cave tourism, and surrounding forest clearance. Preserving pristine limestone formations within the Khammouane biodiversity corridor is critical to safeguarding this unique gecko.
Interesting Factoid
Unlike house geckos that use microscopic sticky hairs (setae) to walk on smooth glass, Rufford’s bent-toed gecko relies on specialized bent joints and needle-sharp claws to sprint upside-down on razor-sharp limestone cave ceilings.
