Overview

The Hua Hin Kukri Snake (Oligodon huahin) is a distinctive colubrid serpent described by herpetologists in 2017 from coastal peninsular Thailand. Named after the district of Hua Hin where it was first discovered, this secretive nocturnal snake belongs to the genus Oligodon, renowned for possessing enlarged, curved, blade-like rear maxillary teeth designed for slicing open tough reptile eggshells.

Biology and Physical Characteristics

Oligodon huahin features an elegant, cylindrical body with smooth, glossy dorsal scales. Its coloration consists of a soft brownish-grey ground color adorned with dozens of faint, dark-edged transverse blotches and a prominent chevron-shaped mask across the top of its head. Its upper jaw contains specialized, flattened, razor-sharp rear teeth that resemble the traditional Gurkha kukri dagger, giving the genus its name.

Behavior and Ecology

Secretive and predominantly nocturnal, the Hua Hin kukri snake spends daylight hours buried beneath loose sand, granite rock slabs, or rotting logs. At night, it emerges to hunt using acute chemoreception, specializing in raiding the subterranean nests of geckos, agamid lizards, and turtles. Using its enlarged blade-like teeth, it slits the leathery shells of reptile eggs to ingest the liquid yolk.

Conservation and Human Impact

Known from only a handful of specimens collected in a rapidly developing coastal region of Thailand, Oligodon huahin faces significant habitat fragmentation. Rapid resort expansion, residential development, and highway construction in Hua Hin District threaten remaining forest fragments. Detailed ecological surveys are urgently required to determine its exact geographic range and abundance.

Interesting Factoid

The Hua Hin kukri snake is equipped with curved, razor-sharp rear teeth shaped like miniature Nepalese kukri daggers, which it uses like a biological can opener to slice open tough reptile eggs.
