Overview
The Ocellated Velvet Gecko (Oedura monilis) is one of Australia’s most strikingly patterned and charismatic nocturnal squamates. Native to the vast inland woodlands and granite belts of Queensland and New South Wales, this arboreal gecko is celebrated for its exquisite, suede-like dorsal skin adorned with alternating transverse bands of creamy-yellow ocelli ringed in rich chocolate brown. Combining silent stealth with incredible adhesive climbing agility, it serves as an essential nocturnal insect predator keeping invertebrate populations balanced across Australian dry forest ecosystems.
Biology and Physical Characteristics
The skin of Oedura monilis consists of minute, granular non-overlapping scales that impart a luxurious velvety texture to the touch. Its dorsal coloration is a rich olive-gray or reddish-brown base overlaid with bold, pale ring-like spots (ocelli) connected by dark net-like lattices, providing flawless disruptive camouflage against lichen-encrusted tree bark and sun-baked rock slabs. Its flattened, paddle-shaped tail serves as a vital fat-storage depot during seasonal droughts and can be autotomized (cast off) to distract pursuing predators. Its dilated toe pads feature expanded subdigital lamellae lined with millions of microscopic setae, generating van der Waals forces that allow the lizard to run effortlessly across smooth vertical surfaces and overhangs.
Behavior and Ecology
Strictly nocturnal and predominantly arboreal, the Ocellated Velvet Gecko spends hot Australian daylight hours concealed in tight, dark micro-fissures beneath the shedding bark of standing eucalyptus and Callitris trees or inside weathered granite clefts. As ambient temperatures drop at twilight, it emerges to stalk bark-dwelling insects, utilizing large, lidless golden eyes with vertical slit pupils that offer superb night vision. In winter, multiple individuals frequently congregate together in communal sheltering crevices to conserve moisture and body warmth.
Conservation and Human Impact
Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, the Ocellated Velvet Gecko maintains healthy, widespread populations across eastern Australia. However, large-scale land clearing for agriculture, commercial forestry that removes mature hollow-bearing dead trees, and firewood harvesting that strips fallen timber reduce local shelter availability. State forest reserves and national parks currently safeguard core tracts of suitable woodland habitat.
Interesting Factoid
Because geckos lack movable eyelids, the Ocellated Velvet Gecko possesses a clear, transparent scale called a ‘spectacle’ over its eye, which it cleans and lubricates by sweeping its broad pink tongue across the eyeball!
