Overview
The Pram Bug (Phronima sedentaria) is an extraordinary, transparent hyperiid amphipod famous for its sinister macabre lifestyle and otherworldly physiology. Widely cited as the biological inspiration for the titular xenomorph in the science-fiction classic ‘Alien,’ this pelagic crustacean attacks gelatinous tunicates, hollows them out from the inside, and moves into the floating translucent corpse to raise its young like a mobile baby stroller.
Biology and Physical Characteristics
Phronima sedentaria features an elongated, crystal-clear glass-like exoskeleton that renders it nearly invisible in the open pelagic water column. Its oversized head is dominated by two massive pairs of compound eyes—a lateral pair for wide peripheral vision and a colossal dorsal pair angled upward to detect the silhouettes of prey against downwelling surface light. Females possess powerful clawed third legs (pereopods) designed to slice and manipulate prey.
Behavior and Ecology
The reproductive strategy of female Phronima is one of the most ruthless in marine biology. Locating a free-floating gelatinous salp or pyrosome, the female uses her sharp mouthparts and front claws to consume the host’s internal organs while carefully leaving the tough barrel-shaped tunic intact. She then crawls inside the hollow barrel, paddling with her pleopods to navigate through the sea while laying hundreds of eggs safely anchored inside this stolen mobile nursery.
Conservation and Human Impact
As an open pelagic organism inhabiting offshore oceanic waters, Phronima sedentaria is not currently threatened by human exploitation. However, because it relies on healthy populations of gelatinous zooplankton like salps, it is indirectly sensitive to disruptions in pelagic food webs caused by rising ocean temperatures and marine plastics that mimic gelatinous prey.
Interesting Factoid
The Pram Bug inspired the creature design of the movie Alien: the female hunts down a barrel-shaped jellyfish, scoops out its insides, climbs into the hollowed-out carcass, and cruises the open ocean inside her floating stolen house.
