Overview

Described in 2014 by researchers from the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, the Dementor Jewel Wasp (Ampulex dementor) is a striking parasitoid wasp native to Thailand. It was voted by the public to be named after the soul-sucking ‘Dementors’ from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, owing to its bizarre behavior of turning cockroach prey into docile, walking zombies via targeted venom injections.

Biology and Physical Characteristics

Distinguished by a stunning, slender body with a bold red-and-black coloration: the head, thorax, and antennae are rich jet-black, while the clypeus, mandibles, and legs sport bright reddish-orange accents. Females possess a modified ovipositor venom stinger that delivers a precise cocktail of octopaminergic receptor antagonists directly into the thoracic and subesophageal ganglia of cockroaches.

Behavior and Ecology

Hunting females seek out large periplanetonid cockroaches. Upon subduing a prey item with an initial sting to paralyze the forelegs, the wasp delivers a pinpoint secondary sting into the victim’s brain. This neurotoxin blocks the escape reflex without killing the host; the wasp then grasps the cockroach’s antenna and leads the obedient, walking victim into a burrow, laying a single egg on its thigh before sealing the tomb.

Conservation and Human Impact

Regarded as Least Concern across its native Southeast Asian range due to stable wild populations and tolerance of secondary forest habitats. It provides valuable natural biological regulation of forest and peri-urban cockroach populations.

Interesting Factoid

Named through a public contest at the Berlin Natural History Museum, the Dementor Wasp does not paralyze its prey into immobility; rather, its neurotoxic venom turns the cockroach into a compliant ‘zombie’ that willingly walks into the wasp’s underground lair on its own legs.
