Overview
The Lined Leaf-tailed Gecko (Uroplatus lineatus) is a master of camouflage belonging to Madagascar’s renowned endemic genus Uroplatus. While most leaf-tailed geckos mimic decayed mossy tree bark or withered dead leaves, this slender, elongated species exhibits a specialized evolutionary strategy tailored for bamboo thickets. By mimicking the parallel grain, stripes, and fibrous nodes of native bamboo shoots, it vanishes in plain sight along vertical stems.
Biology and Physical Characteristics
Uroplatus lineatus possesses an unusually slender, cylindrical body and a narrow head that tapers into a pointed snout. Its torso is adorned with bold, alternating longitudinal pinstripes of creamy gold, rich russet, and dark chocolate brown that perfectly replicate bamboo fiber patterns. Its tail is long, laterally compressed, and shaped like a slender dried bamboo leaf. The gecko features large lidless eyes with vertical slit pupils containing four pinpoint pinhole apertures that provide acute color vision in near total darkness.
Behavior and Ecology
By day, the gecko rests motionless vertically aligned along bamboo stalks, pressing its entire flat ventral surface firmly against the plant to eliminate shadows. At dusk, it awakens to stalk invertebrates across the bamboo canopy. Equipped with expanded adhesive toe pads lined with microscopic subdigital setae, it moves effortlessly across glossy silica bamboo surfaces. If threatened by a predator, it opens its mouth wide to reveal a startling bright red or black oral mucosa, emitting an eerie hissing distress vocalization.
Conservation and Human Impact
Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, Uroplatus lineatus is relatively widespread across protected national parks in northeastern Madagascar, including Masoala and Marojejy. Nevertheless, it remains vulnerable to local habitat destruction caused by slash-and-burn farming and timber harvesting. It is protected under CITES Appendix II to regulate international commercial pet trade.
Interesting Factoid
Unlike other leaf-tailed geckos that look like crumpled brown leaves or mossy tree trunks, the Lined Leaf-tailed Gecko has golden and brown racing stripes running down its body to disguise itself as a joint of native bamboo.
