Overview
The Austral Parakeet (Enicognathus ferrugineus), also known as the cachaña, holds the remarkable distinction of being the southernmost living parrot species on the planet, thriving in chilly, wind-swept temperate rainforests and subantarctic beech woodlands down to the southernmost tip of Tierra del Fuego. Well-adapted to harsh maritime climates, this social, gregarious bird congregates in noisy, fast-flying flocks that feed and forage in the ancient Nothofagus forests of Chilean and Argentine Patagonia.
Biology and Physical Characteristics
Enicognathus ferrugineus features an overall dull emerald-green plumage that blends seamlessly into the mossy canopy of southern beech trees. Its feathers are delicately edged in dark brown or dusky scalloping, giving its body a textured, barred appearance. A narrow, brick-red frontal band adorns its forehead above a dark, gently hooked bill, and its lower abdomen exhibits a prominent rusty-red patch. Its elongated, pointed tail feathers are reddish-brown, providing aerodynamic stability during swift maneuvers through dense forest canopies and against turbulent Patagonian gusts.
Behavior and Ecology
Austral parakeets are cooperative, highly vocal birds that typically travel in tight-knit flocks ranging from a dozen to several hundred individuals outside the breeding season. They feed primarily on the seeds of southern beech (Nothofagus pumilio and N. antarctica), seeds of Araucaria araucana monkey-puzzle trees, and native berries such as calafate (Berberis microphylla). They nest high in natural cavities or abandoned woodpecker holes in ancient decaying beech trees, lining nests with wood chips where females incubate clutches of four to six white eggs.
Conservation and Human Impact
Evaluated as Least Concern by the IUCN, the Austral Parakeet maintains healthy wild populations across its extensive range in Patagonia. While historical deforestation and livestock grazing cleared portions of its native woodlands, large tracts of pristine subantarctic forest remain well protected within national parks across Chile and Argentina. Occasional persecution occurs in agricultural areas where flocks forage in orchards or grain crops, but the species remains abundant and ecologically secure.
Interesting Factoid
Holding the world record as the southernmost parrot on Earth, the Austral Parakeet routinely thrives in the freezing snow and howling blizzards of Tierra del Fuego, where temperatures plummet well below freezing!
