Overview
The Mwanza Flat-headed Rock Agama (Agama mwanzae), popularly dubbed the ‘Spider-Man lizard,’ is a vividly colored agamid lizard endemic to the East African savanna. Inhabiting sun-drenched granitic boulder outcrops (kopjes) across the Serengeti, dominant males display a striking bicolored suit of bright crimson-violet and deep indigo-blue.
Biology and Physical Characteristics
Sexually dimorphic, subordinate males and females are cryptically patterned in dull earthy browns and greys. In contrast, dominant breeding males exhibit brilliant carmine-red or magenta heads, necks, and shoulders, sharply demarcated from deep electric blue bodies, limbs, and tails. Their body is dorsoventrally compressed, enabling them to squeeze into tight fissures among granite boulders.
Behavior and Ecology
Strictly diurnal, Mwanza rock agamas bask openly on exposed boulder crests during the heat of the day, soaking up solar radiation to maintain peak metabolic agility. Dominant territorial males defend elevated perches atop kopjes, performing energetic head-bobs and body push-ups to assert ownership over a harem of females. They prey actively on terrestrial invertebrates, particularly foraging ants and grasshoppers.
Conservation and Human Impact
The Mwanza Flat-headed Rock Agama is evaluated as Least Concern by the IUCN, thriving abundantly throughout protected wildlife expanses such as Serengeti National Park and Masai Mara National Reserve. Because of its sensational likeness to comic book superhero Spider-Man, it has experienced demand in the exotic pet trade.
Interesting Factoid
The dominant male Mwanza rock agama looks so remarkably like the superhero Spider-Man with its bright red head and shoulders and electric blue body that it became an international viral sensation!
