Overview
The Painted Rustyhood (Pterostylis roensis) is a charismatic, multi-flowered terrestrial orchid native to the semi-arid woodlands and mallee heartlands of Western Australia. Belonging to the rufa group of greenhood orchids, this distinctive species features a compact raceme of translucent, reddish-brown and green hooded flowers equipped with an exquisitely sensitive, insect-trapping touch labellum.
Biology and Physical Characteristics
Pterostylis roensis produces a basal rosette of four to ten ovate, olive-green leaves that typically wither by flowering time to conserve precious moisture in dry inland soils. The erect flowering scape reaches up to 30 centimeters and bears two to eight crowded, nodding flowers. The galea (hood) is translucent white with rich reddish-brown longitudinal stripes. The lateral sepals droop downward and bear slender point-like tips, while the narrow labellum is adorned with long, glistening silvery sensory trichomes.
Behavior and Ecology
Flowering from September through November, the Painted Rustyhood employs a touch-triggered mechanical trap to execute pollination. Tiny fungus gnats (Mycetophilidae) land on the glistening, hair-fringed labellum. The slightest physical displacement triggers an explosive, hinge-like contraction of the irritable labellum, slamming the gnat against the inner column within a fraction of a second. As the trapped insect struggles to squeeze through a narrow egress channel, it is coated with sticky glue and receives pollinia, ensuring cross-fertilization at the next flower.
Conservation and Human Impact
Pterostylis roensis is classified as Least Concern, thriving across extensive tracts of semi-arid crown land, regional flora reserves, and pastoral leases. It shows substantial ecological resilience, tolerating harsh inland summer temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius by resting as an insulated subterranean tuber. Key threats are confined to localized land clearing and heavy grazing pressure by feral goats and rabbits.
Interesting Factoid
The irritable labellum of the Painted Rustyhood resets itself automatically within 30 to 60 minutes after snapping shut, re-priming the botanical trap for another insect visitor.
