Overview
The Spotted Bass (Micropterus punctulatus), colloquially celebrated as the Kentucky Bass, is a premier freshwater gamefish in the sunfish family Centrarchidae native to the central and southeastern United States. Intermediate in appearance and habits between the Largemouth and Smallmouth bass, it is distinguished by longitudinal rows of small dark spots across its lower belly and a preference for cool, rocky river waters with moderate current.
Biology and Physical Characteristics
The Spotted Bass features an olive-green dorsal coloration with dark diamond-shaped blotches along the midline that fuse into an uneven lateral stripe. Below this lateral stripe lie clean horizontal rows of distinct dark spots on the scales, giving the fish its name. Anatomically, it can be separated from the Largemouth Bass by its smaller mouth (the maxillary does not extend past the posterior margin of the eye) and the presence of a distinct patch of fine teeth on its tongue.
Behavior and Ecology
Spotted Bass are specialized predators of rocky, current-swept waters, spending much of their time near submerged boulders, gravel bars, and deep reservoir drop-offs. They feed primarily on benthic crustaceans—particularly native crayfish—as well as small forage fishes such as shad and shiners. In spring, males construct saucer-shaped spawning nests in coarse gravel substrates, aggressively guarding eggs and newly hatched fry against predatory panfish.
Conservation and Human Impact
The Spotted Bass is categorized as Least Concern by the IUCN, with widespread and stable populations supported by active state fisheries management and sportfishing regulations. However, when introduced into novel river drainages outside its native range, it readily hybridizes with native Smallmouth Bass and endemic river basses, posing genetic dilution concerns.
Interesting Factoid
Anglers and ichthyologists identify the Spotted Bass with a simple fingertip check: running a finger down the center of its tongue reveals a rough, sandpaper-like tooth patch absent in largemouth bass.
