Overview

Zug’s Odd-scaled Snake (Achalinus zugorum) is an elusive, subterranean serpent native to the karst forests of northern Vietnam. Formally described in 2020, this non-venomous burrower is celebrated for its remarkable iridescent dorsal scales that spread apart to expose dark interstitial skin beneath.

Biology and Physical Characteristics

Features unique, non-overlapping scales that shimmer with petroleum-like rainbow iridescence under light. Lacks expanded eye pupils and possesses reduced eyes with flattened retinas specialized for subterranean navigation, accompanied by an elongated, flattened skull built for burrowing into damp soils and limestone fissures.

Behavior and Ecology

Highly semifossorial and nocturnal, spending daylight hours burrowed beneath thick humus, decaying logs, and cave talus. Emerges during humid rainstorms to hunt earthworms, slugs, and soft-bodied invertebrates along the forest floor, using chemosensory tongue flicking to navigate total subterranean darkness.

Conservation and Human Impact

Evaluated as Data Deficient owing to its recent discovery, but highly vulnerable due to rapid deforestation, limestone quarrying for cement production, and expanding commercial monocultures across northern Vietnam. Protected within limited municipal forest reserves.

Interesting Factoid

The iridescent scales of Zug’s Odd-scaled Snake do not overlap like typical snake scales; instead, they lie adjacent, refracting sunlight into brilliant oil-slick rainbow highlights across its body.
